For nearly 10 years, Stay Green Landscaping has partnered with the Catalina Island Company to care for some of the island’s most iconic properties, from the Descanso Beach Club and Pavilion Hotel to the recently renovated Atwater Hotel and historic Mt. Ada, the original Wrigley family home.
Now, that partnership has grown to include a major tree care initiative. Stay Green’s team is trimming eucalyptus, palm, and other trees across two key areas, Two Harbors, a remote community with fewer than 200 residents, and the city of Avalon. While the island community is small, Catalina welcomes over one million visitors each year, making the health, safety, and appearance of its landscapes especially important.
Over eight weeks, eight skilled tree climbers and groundsmen travel to the island four days a week, returning to the mainland each Thursday before heading back on Monday. The project is more than just trimming trees, it is a significant logistical operation. In the first weeks at
Two Harbors, every piece of equipment, from climbing gear and chainsaws to chippers, had to be transported by barge from San Pedro. The journey alone takes 12 to 16 hours, requiring detailed planning to ensure equipment, tools, and supplies arrived safely and on time.
Chris Angelo, CEO of Stay Green, shared, "Catalina Island is a special place and this project highlights our team’s ability to deliver expert tree care under challenging conditions. We are proud to help preserve the island’s natural beauty while supporting the Catalina Island Company in maintaining these historic and beloved properties."
The work in Avalon follows, where access to resources is easier but the scale and care required for trimming eucalyptus groves and palms remain significant. Jason Clay, Facilities and Program Manager at the Catalina Island Company, noted, "Expanding our collaboration with Stay Green to include tree care was a natural next step. Their team’s expertise, planning, and professionalism ensure our properties remain safe, healthy, and beautifully maintained, all while respecting the unique environment of the island."
Stay Green’s work on Catalina Island demonstrates how professional landscaping goes beyond
routine maintenance. By combining careful planning, skilled execution, and a commitment to preserving the natural and historic beauty of the island, the team is making a visible difference, one tree at a time.
