Southern California landscapes are changing. This time, it could pay off for you. The Metropolitan Water District has doubled its turf replacement rebate to $7 per square foot, giving businesses, HOAs, schools, and public institutions a limited-time opportunity to turn unused grass into sustainable, water-wise landscapes.
What Is Turf Conversion?
Turf conversion removes non-functional turf (grass that serves no recreational or functional purpose) and replaces it with:
Climate-appropriate plants
Water-efficient irrigation
Smart design features like stormwater retention
This not only conserves water but also transforms your property’s appearance with a mix of drought-tolerant plants, native shrubs, or colorful seasonal options that thrive in our climate.
Why Act Now
California’s AB 1572 bans potable water use on non-functional turf starting in 2027. Delaying could mean rushing to comply later, without rebate funding to offset costs.
As Stay Green landscape designer Brent Green shared at the CACM Inland Empire Fall Educational Forum,
“This rebate essentially makes turf conversion cost-neutral for many properties. When you factor in the $7 per square foot savings, the investment becomes a financial wash. Plus it lowers water bills and maintenance costs in the long run.”
Beyond Compliance: Build a Smarter Landscape
Turf conversion is more than regulation, it’s an opportunity to:
Enhance curb appeal and show environmental leadership
Reduce long-term maintenance and water costs
Support pollinators with native plant palettes
Build climate resilience for your property
As Brent puts it, “It’s not about losing green space—it’s about creating smarter green space that’s beautiful, functional, and sustainable.”
