You Call THIS Winter?

cracked soil with sapling growing throughYes, in terms of having to endure the harshness of winter, we have it pretty good in Southern California. From a comfort standpoint we’re fortunate — not many Southland residents have to shovel snow or drive through fierce winter storms.

That also means we have the good fortune of enjoying our landscapes all year long, even in the winter. Here at Stay Green we consider winter a great opportunity to prepare our clients’ landscapes for spring. It may not be a busy growing season, but it’s a great season to undertake preventive maintenance and promote long-term plant health.

But, there’s a down side to our mild winters: Especially this year, winter is the season that reminds us why it’s so important to choose drought-tolerant vegetation and to design irrigation systems that operate efficiently, promoting sustainability and conserving our state’s precious water supplies.

As 2013 drew to a close, we received news that it was shaping up to be California’s driest year on record, and the state Department of Water Resources announced that available water supplies would be at near record lows, with just 5 percent of State Water Project entitlements expected to be met this coming year. As of mid-December, just 3.49 inches of rain had fallen on Downtown Los Angeles all year long — just over a quarter of the normal amount.

“We hope things improve with this winter’s storms,” Mark Cowin, director of the California Department of Water Resources, told the Reuters news service. “But there is no guarantee that 2014 won’t be our third consecutive dry year. (The Nov. 27) allocation is a stark reminder that California’s fickle weather demands that we make year-round conservation a way of life.”

We couldn’t agree more. The Stay Green team makes sustainability and environmental responsibility a top priority as we serve our clients, every season of the year. It’s a top consideration in everything we do, from the selection of plants to the design of irrigation systems and the equipment choices we make.
